THERMAL — The AIG Thermal $1 Million Grand Prix Sunday drew some of the world’s best equestrian showjumpers to the HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal.
More than 40 equestrian riders from around the world competed for one of the top 20 cash prizes. The first place showjumper got to trot home with a grand prize of $350,000.
John and Chianto were the first pair to ride clear over the difficult course. A slight rub in the jump off cost them the 1st place position, but they've had an amazing string of victories at Thermal this season.In addition to 2012 U.S. Olympic team members McLain Ward and Rich Fellers, Bermuda Dunes resident John Pearce competed in the event.
Pearce and his horse, Chianto, won two grand prix victories in the past two weeks.
