SARA AND HARRY TAKE OPEN INTERMEDIATE AT GALWAY DOWNS

Sara Mittleider and her 8 year old Trakehner, Harry Houdini took the blue ribbon in the Open Intermediate Division at Galway Downs this past weekend.

With their dressage score of 31.2, the pair spent the weekend chasing Hawley Bennett Awad and Five O'Clock Somewhere, who sat in first place with a dressage score of 28.8. But the stadium round proved decisive. Sara and Harry put in a faultless round, only to watch Hawley and Five O'Clock Somewhere pick up an unfortunate 8 faults. The 8 faults moved them to second with a final score of 36.8. Sara and Harry took the first place spot with a final score of 31.2.

ROLEX!

Rolex Kentucky Three-Day 2013 is wrapping up today with stadium jumping, beginning at 1:15 p.m. Eastern. Twenty-nine horses out of the starting 46 will continue on to this final phase for a chance to win the most prestigious Three-Day in the United States.

The day began for the competitors this morning at 8:30 a.m. with the Final Horse Inspection.  Thirty horses were presented to the ground jury, with only one horse being spun, James Allison's Tivoli. The rest of the field, which completed yesterday's test of cross country, passed. The leaderboard can be found at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day website.

In the remaining horses and riders who will face today's jumping test there is some serious girl power with our west coast riders, Kristi Nunnink on the lovely gray mare, R-Star, and Hawley Bennett-Awad aboard her Ferrari of a mare, Gin & Juice, standing 9th and 10th respectively. Four gorgeous ladies show the boys how it's done!

If you missed yesterday's excitement, videos of cross country are posted at USEF Network.  Hawley's and Kristi's rides are featured in the 6th video.

Here is Hawley discussing her ride with Frankie Thieriot only moments after her finish.

And here is Kristi giving her impressions of the cross country course and her ride on R-Star.

For up-to-the-minute reporting on all the excitement, you won't find a better blog than Eventing Nation. Live-streaming of the final stadium phase can be watched at USEF Network. For an informative walk-through of the course, here is the video of course designer, Derek di Grazia, along with James Wofford, discussing the aspects of the course with Frankie.

It's particularly interesting to watch these two incredible horsemen discuss the course and how it might ride after having watched yesterday's field of riders actually tackle it. Those fences are BIG!

Good luck to everyone today!

Go get'em, girls!

Division at the Galway Downs International Event held in Temecula, CA over Easter weekend.

John Strassburger and Heather Bailey have already posted a press release at Galway Downs website detailing the excitement of the weekend.

Awad Races To Top Of Galway Downs International Horse Trials

Temecula, Calif., March 30, 2013 — Hawley Bennett-Awad is no stranger to victory at Galway Downs, and this spring she and Linda Paine’s superstar mare Gin ‘N Juice have gone perfectly, winning their first two outings of the year. They made it three-for-three by flying to victory (50.1 penalties) in the CIC3* at the Galway Downs International Horse Trials.

Tivoli and James Alliston (55.3) moved in to second behind Bennett-Awad when overnight leader  Kristi Nunnink and R-Star added 8.8 time penalties to fall to third (56.1). Alliston also finished fourth on Jumbo’s Jake (56.2).

"This spring has been unbelievable with her,” said a beaming Bennett-Awad, who rides for her native Canada but lives in Temecula. “She was a machine — foot-perfect everywhere.” Bennett-Awad added only .8 time penalties to grab the top prizes.

Gin ‘N Juice’s speed propelled her to victory, because the optimum time of 6:51 proved to be tough to achieve — only Tivoli and Jumbo’s Jake finished faster than the optimum time.

“They must have wheeled the course really tight,” said Bennett-Awad of the time penalties. “[At the CCI3* last fall] I could have been 20 seconds fast, and today I was really riding. I don’t think I could have gone any faster. But [course designer Ian Stark] wanted it to affect the placings, for sure.”
All results here.

Sara and Harry galloping to victory.
In other divisions, Sara Mittleider - aboard her fabulous gelding, Harry Houdini - won the Open Preliminary, finishing on their dressage score of 22.7.

Also taking the win on their dressage score were Jessa Hills and her gorgeous mare, Da Luna, in the Senior Training Rider division. Jessa and her girl put in a lovely test for a score of 26.4.

CONGRATULATIONS, LADIES!

Watch the videos of all the excitement at  Galway Downs or at US Eventing TV. The videos are brought to you by Frankie Thieriot for US Eventing TV. Great job, Frankie!
